5 Peptides People Confuse All the Time

The peptide research space moves quickly, and with similar names, overlapping research areas and plenty of social-media misinformation, it is easy to mix certain compounds up. Here are five pairs that get confused all the time — and the structural and mechanistic differences that separate them.

1. Tirzepatide vs Retatrutide

These two are constantly conflated in metabolic-research discussions. In laboratory models, tirzepatide is studied for its interaction with GLP-1 and GIP receptor pathways, while retatrutide is examined across GLP-1, GIP and glucagon receptor pathways. That additional glucagon pathway is what makes retatrutide a "triple-pathway" research compound versus the dual-pathway profile of tirzepatide.

2. BPC-157 vs TB-500

Despite frequently being bundled together online, these are entirely distinct peptides. BPC-157 is a short synthetic fragment derived from a gastric protein sequence. TB-500 is a synthetic version of a fragment of thymosin beta-4, a naturally occurring protein — fundamentally different in origin, length and composition.

3. CJC-1295 vs Ipamorelin

These appear together in growth hormone–pathway research but operate through different mechanisms in experimental models: CJC-1295 is studied as a GHRH analogue, while ipamorelin is examined as a ghrelin-receptor mimetic. They are not interchangeable compounds.

4. Tesamorelin vs CJC-1295

Both relate to GHRH-pathway research, but they are distinct molecules. Tesamorelin is a modified GHRH analogue with its own structural modifications, whereas CJC-1295 is a different analogue studied for its longer-acting profile in laboratory settings.

5. Melanotan II vs PT-141

These share melanocortin-related origins but are separate research subjects. Melanotan II shows broad melanocortin-receptor activity in vitro, while PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a modified derivative studied separately for its own receptor-interaction profile.

Why the confusion happens

Small structural differences can place compounds into entirely different research categories. Confusion typically arises when compounds are discussed together online, when mechanisms are oversimplified, or when superficially similar research contexts lead people to assume the structures are the same. When in doubt, check the sequence, the receptor pathways studied, and the primary literature.
